Nurse Practitioner – Psychiatric

The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner is an integral part of the trans-disciplinary Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) Team, providing psychiatric care to clients in order to promote wellness, recovery and rehabilitation. Responsibilities are implemented within the framework of agency policy, professional ethics and regulatory guidelines. The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner may be assigned to more than one ACT team and collaborates with the Team Leaders to ensure optimal use of psychiatric time.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Complete an Initial Psychiatric Evaluation and Mental Status Exam for new clients and meet with ACT clients at least monthly;
  • Provide treatment for assigned clients as prescribed by the treatment plan and documents the client chart with an appropriate note for each encounter;
  • Write orders and prescriptions for medications, and monitor for efficacy and side effects;
  • Monthly Psychiatric Review of Team charts;
  • Work closely with the team and the client in establishing and following an optimal recovery/service plan;
  • Participate in check-in meetings and case-reviews, provides consultations and make home visits with team members as needed;
  • Collaborate with the nursing staff to coordinate prescriptions and orders, and to oversee the overall health of the clients;
  • Establish a work schedule, in collaboration with the Team Leader that ensures monthly psychiatric visits for all clients;
  • Provide coverage for other agency psychiatrists during vacation/sick time;
  • Engage identified clients in psychiatric services, both onsite and in the community;
  • Participate in facilitating appropriate hospitalizations, crisis interventions and referrals; and other duties as deem necessary.
  • Communicate with hospital staff to ensure optimal treatment and discharge planning;
  • Supervise psychiatric residents from local universities;
  • Provide in-services and trainings for staff;
  • Perform other related work as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be a Licensed Board certified psychiatric nurse practitioner
  • Licensed to practice psychiatry in the District of Columbia
  • Experience or training in community psychiatry preferred
  • Co-occurring disorders competent
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Willingness to work in a harm reduction program model
  • Patience, creativity, flexibility, compassion, and sensitivity to persons with disabilities and other minority populations
